Rhymes: -eː Etymology: PIE word *tréyes First attested in 1954. Early Norwegian use is attested in the hyphenated spelling 3-D; the solid spelling 3D is attested by 1955. Internationalism, interpreted in Norwegian as an abbreviation of tre (“three”) dimensjoner (“dimensions”) or tredimensjonal (“three-dimensional”). The notation became widespread internationally in connection with stereoscopic film in the early 1950s; English 3-D is attested by 1952, and Swedish 3 D by 1953. The numeral tre (“three”), represented by the digit 3, derives from Old Norse þrír (“three”), from Proto-Germanic *þrīz (“three”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tréyes (“three”). The noun dimensjon (“dimension”), represented by the initial D, derives from Latin dīmēnsiō (“measurement, dimension”), a verbal noun of Latin dīmētior (“to measure out”), formed from dis- (“apart”) and mētior (“to measure”); the latter ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (“to measure”). Parallel international abbreviations include Norwegian Nynorsk 3D, Danish 3D-, Swedish 3D, German 3D (also 3-D), French 3D and English 3D (“3D”). "etymology_text": "PIE word\n *tréyes\nFirst attested in 1954. Early Norwegian use is attested in the hyphenated spelling 3-D; the solid spelling 3D is attested by 1955.\nInternationalism, interpreted in Norwegian as an abbreviation of tre (“three”) dimensjoner (“dimensions”) or tredimensjonal (“three-dimensional”). The notation became widespread internationally in connection with stereoscopic film in the early 1950s; English 3-D is attested by 1952, and Swedish 3 D by 1953.\nThe numeral tre (“three”), represented by the digit 3, derives from Old Norse þrír (“three”), from Proto-Germanic *þrīz (“three”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *tréyes (“three”). The noun dimensjon (“dimension”), represented by the initial D, derives from Latin dīmēnsiō (“measurement, dimension”), a verbal noun of Latin dīmētior (“to measure out”), formed from dis- (“apart”) and mētior (“to measure”); the latter ultimately derives from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁- (“to measure”).\nParallel international abbreviations include Norwegian Nynorsk 3D, Danish 3D-, Swedish 3D, German 3D (also 3-D), French 3D and English 3D (“3D”).",
